Meet Zoe! She a 5-6 year old German Shepherd mix. She was hit by a car and left for dead when the Dekalb shelter found her. Her leg was shattered in the accident and ultimately had to be removed in order for her to live with a good quality of life. Although her recovery was tough in the beginning, she gets along great now. Shortly after coming to AARF, we learned that Zoe was also heartworm positive. We have treated her heartworms, and she is now fully recovered. Zoe was very shy and depressed when we got her from the shelter. In her foster home, she would shut down in her crate and refuse to come out. Zoe is now a happy dog that loves her foster family and has bonded with the other dogs in the house. She rarely goes into her crate at all these days, preferring instead to stay by the side of her foster mom or dad, or playing happily with the other dogs. Although she may still be just a little shy when she first meets people, she warms up very quickly. We don't think she was treated very nicely before coming to AARF. She tends to shy away from loud voices, as if she had been yelled at quite a bit in her former home. Therefore, she would probably do best in a somewhat calm and quiet home, although she is used to being around well-behaved children over the age of 10. Zoe is a very loyal dog once she gets to know you, and will make a wonderful pet to a loving family. If you would like to meet her, please apply for her today!

Hi folks! I'm Auggie (short for Augustine). I'm a 5 year old Golden Retriever mix. I was at animal control for 5 very long, scary and lonely months, but the day before I was to be put to sleep, some really nice people stepped in to save me. Right now I weigh 55 lbs and can stand to put on even more weight. When I got out of animal control I was 10 lbs. lighter and covered in mats! Because I spent so much time lying on the cold concrete floor in the shelter, I had some issues with my hips when I first got out. Since being in my foster home and getting lots of good food and joint supplements, my muscles have started coming back and I'm getting around much better. I'll probably need to go to a specialist before long to make sure everything is okay. Sadly, I also have heartworms, but my foster parents don't seem to mind. They tell me as soon as I gain enough weight I'll go through treatment to get rid of the heartworms. My foster folks just keep on giving me lots of love, food and exercise, and I'm getting stronger every day! I return their kindness with lots of kisses and constant smiles! I love to take long walks and am great on a leash. I'm very social and like being with other dogs and people but I'm still working on having cats around. They're fun to chase! If you think I might be the guy for you, fill out an application so we can meet. You won't regret it!
